Hold those jazz-hands high for #22, our “JAZZISODE!!!”

Jump for Jazz!

Hello, friends!  We’re back with Episode #22, our “Jazzisode!” This time around we take on two films that have definite jazz connections.  Paul is a HUGE jazz music fan, so you’ll for sure want to tune in to hear what his thoughts are on these two very different movies…

Paul choose 1988’s “Bird” directed by Clint Eastwood.  It’s hard to believe I had never seen this well-known biography…

Forest Whitaker as Charlie “Bird” Parker – 1988

I picked last year’s big hit “La La Land” directed by Damien Chazzelle, and joining us to discuss this modern-marvel of a movie is our friend Mr. Knives Monroe.

Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling in La La Land – 2016

We have a lot of fun discussing these two films, and along the way we talk about what we’re watching right now, Paul almost tells a story about midget hookers, and of course we divulge what movies we’ll be talking about next time (hint: they involve a women’s prison, zombies, and Jon Lovitz…).

Won’t you join us?

Episode #21 aka The “Wesisode!” A Wes Anderson Triple Feature!

“The Wesi-what?”

Hello friends!  We are very happy to announce that episode #21 is THE WESISODE!!!  This time around we are taking a look at three movies by the talented Texas-born director Wes Anderson.  My movie choice was “Moonrise Kingdom” and Paul’s pick was “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.”

“In this movie I play an explorer of the oceans of the world, but it is NOT based on Jacques Cousteau…”
“Riiiiiiiiiiight…”

We also picked “Rushmore,” and we both chose it for the simple reason that we both wanted to talk about it.

“My performance in Rushmore? You’re welcome.”

Of course when you talk about these movies you are also talking about Bill Murray, who stars in all three to varying degrees of success…according to one of us, anyway.

“Did someone mention my name?”

Also: we talk about what we’ve been enjoying lately entertainment-wise, Paul’s mom Teri sends a message, and we announce the movies we’ve picked for next time (hint: they’re both jazz music-related).

Won’t you join us?

Episode #20 is here and it’s one greasy trip!

Episode #20!

Grease is the word this time around: my choice for Paul is the 2016 film The Greasy Strangler, one of the most unique movies I’ve seen in my life…for better or worse.  Paul’s choice for me is Con Air, starring the always-so-subtle Nicolas Cage in one of his most Shakespearean roles ever.

“Put the bunny back in the box.”  Poetry.

Poe, but NOT Edgar Allen…

We also talk about what’s been keeping us entertained lately (I saw two fantastic movies from last year), and since it’s episode #20, we not only announce what our next movies will be (another themed episode!), but we also rate the movies from the last ten episodes, and Paul shares his Paul Park Figures.  Will be still be neck-and-neck score-wise? After this week I’m not so sure…

It’s loads of greasy, convict-powered, mind-numbing fun, so what are you waiting for?  Join us, won’t you?

#19 is half Pest, half Homicide, and ALL ABOUT our SPECIAL GUEST TERI KASTAVA! (Paul’s mom!)

Jean Arless (aka Joan Marshall) as Emily in “Homicide”

HYSTO? #19 has arrived, and now we can announce that our special guest is none other than Teri Kastava, who just happens to be Paul’s mom!

This time around my choice was Homicidal, the William Castle classic from 1961.  This just happens to be one of Teri’s favorites also, but the question is what does Paul think…

I just love vintage wig ads…don’t you?

After that we talk about Paul’s choice, 1997’s The Pest, starring John Lequizamo in a bunch of different disguises…

A bunch of different disguises but, sadly, not this one…

Anyway, Paul and I had a wonderful time talking about these very different films, I bring up Joan Crawford (NOT Joan Rivers) way too many times, Paul tells a story that is one for the books, and we announce what’s coming up next time in episode #20.

Join for this one, won’t you?  I bet you’ll enjoy listening to Teri as much as we enjoyed talking with her.

‘Til next time…

Jay

It’s Deathisode #18, and it’s deathinately deathalicious!

“Hit and run is no longer a crime…it’s the national sport!” Death Race 2000 – 1975

Hello HYSTO hounds!  It’s deathly important that you listen to the latest show: it’s DEATHISODE #18, and it’s DEATHTASTIC, BABY!  Paul and I each picked a movie for each other as usual, then we realized we both picked movies whose title begins with the word DEATH: Paul chose 1974’s Death Wish, and I picked 1975’s Death Race 2000!

Death Wish – 1974 starring Charles Bronson and his one epression…

Please join us for the fun as take a Death Trip to the 70’s!  We also talk about Joe Franklin, Don Rickles, the podcast S-Town (my current obsession), and of course we reveal our movie choices for episode #19 (and hint about a special guest!).

It’s the deathiest deathisode we ever deathed ever! Won’t you join us?  We’ll be deathly ill if you won’t!

Jay

HYSTO? #18 will deathinately be a deathisode to remember!

Hello HYSTO-philes! Paul and I are really excited about the next episode, in fact you could say that we’re excited TO DEATH!

“You’ll pay for that pun, punk…”

How deathly is this episode? For my assignment Paul has chosen 1974’s Death Wish starring the ever-so-emotional Charles Bronson.  My pick is also from the 70’s, 1975 to be exact: the “B” movie classic Death Race 2000, starring David Carridine and a pre-Rocky Sly Stallone.

“Yo, Adrian! Say hello to my little friend!”

So please join us next week for HYSTO? #18, when we DEATH-inately are going to give these two 70’sploitation flicks the respect (or the shade) they deserve!

See you then!

#17: A Salute to Bill Paxton

Mr. Bill Paxton 1955-2017

Hello HYSTO? friends!  We’re back after a three-week break, and we came back with a purpose: to honor the work of an amazing actor that we lost recently, Mr. Bill Paxton.

Paul chose Million Dollar Arm, a recent film, and one that Paxton has a small but pivotal role in.  I picked one of my favorite films  Frailty, which Paxton directed himself.  How did he do? Listen in to find out! We also discuss the movie True Lies, in which Bill gives one of his finest comic performances of his career (in our opinion). How does the rest of the film hold up?  Join us and find out!

All of this and, of course we also announce which movies we’ve chosen for episode #18. Please give us a listen as we pay respect to a man that left an incredible body of work behind for us to enjoy: the amazing Bill Paxton.

Jay

Frailty – 2001
Million Dollar Arm – 2014
True Lies – 1994

HYSTO? #17 is our tribute to Bill Paxton

Mr. Bill Paxton 1955-2017

As you all know, we lost Bill Paxton this year.  In honor of his extraordinary career we want to pay tribute to him and talk about three very different performances (out of so many) that Mr. Paxton left for us to enjoy.

Even though we’ve both seen it, we just had to include True Lies (1994) in this show because he’s just so damned good in it.  And we both want an excuse to watch it again.  We said we would break our own rules, didn’t we?

Would you buy a used car from this man?

Paul has chosen a baseball movie (ANOTHER ONE) starring Jon Hamm called Million Dollar Arm (2014) in which Bill plays Tom House, who is a real person according to Paul.  Of course I have no idea who he is, but Paul swears by Bill’s performance, so I’m taking his word on this one.

Nope. Still no idea who he is supposed to be…

My choice for Paul is the horror film (ANOTHER ONE) Frailty (2001) starring Matthew McConaughey and directed by…Bill Paxton.  This one has been on my short list for Paul since day one, so the choice was a simple one.  This movie is truly dark, and Paxton’s performance is absolutely haunting.  PLUS there’s lots of skeevy moments where I get to torture Paul, so it’s a win all the way around…

Paxton and his Frailty co-star, Otis…

…so please join us as we pay our respects to a great actor, a talented director, and the only man to have been killed by a Terminator, an Alien, and a Predator.

Jay

Episode #16 says it’s killin’ me, Smalls…it’s also killing a few men in Japan…

Hello, friends!  Episode #16 is finally here, and in it we cover two of the most disparate films you could ever think of: The Sandlot from 1993, and Audition from 1999.

Such a tasteful and refined young woman. What could go wrong?

I always knew at some point I would make Paul watch  Audition, but the person who really wanted to torture Paul with this horror classic is my husband Rick, so he gets full credit on this one.  And Paul lived to tell about it…

Meanwhile I had to watch another sports movie, and you know how excited that makes me…

You’re telling me there’s ANOTHER baseball movie next time??? NOOOOOOO!!!!

So gather the kiddies around your smart phone (not really) while you listen to us tear apart two movies that simply COULD NOT be more different.  Also: we announce our movie picks for Episode #17, which will be a special tribute episode.  Who are we saluting?  You’ll have to tune in to find out…

Enjoy!

Jay

Episode #16 just may feature the worst cinema torture yet…

Hello friends!  We usually record our show on the weekend and I post it by Sunday night, but we had some scheduling issues this time around, so we will be posting a few days later.

I really hope you all can join us, because I can honestly say that this may be my WORST CINEMA TORTURE EVER inflicted on Paul.  I’m talking about the Japanese horror classic Audition (1999 – Takashi Miike).  If you have even heard of this movie you know that Paul is in for an adventure he won’t forget…

“Hey everyone! Let’s play Audition! I’ll get the piano wire…”

My assignment from Paul was to watch the 1993 film The Sandlot directed by David M. Evans.  I watched this the film for the first time a couple days ago, and I have a (sand) lot to say about it.  (Rim shot!)

I can’t look at this picture without hearing the Bee Gees sing “Staying Alive”…

All this, PLUS we’ll be announcing our picks for the next episode.  I have a feeling Paul is going to come at me with guns a’blazing, so you won’t want to miss the fun!
