Get Out Your Tissues, Folks, It’s Episode #64!

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas – 2008

Hello Hystophiles! We’re back with Episode #64, and you’d warm up your tear ducts for this one because this time around we’re discussing the film The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, the 2008 directed by Mark Herman.

Can you tell which side is the concentration camp? Need a hint? “Pajamas”

It’s the story of boy whose family moves because his father has been reassigned by the miltary…to place called Auschwitz. (Actually they never call it that in the film, but it’s heavily implied…)

Yeah, this can’t end well…

Honestly, it’s a tough watch…but is it worth it? Listen in to find out! We also talk about what we’ve been doing and watching lately, and we announce what’s next for our Valentine Episode!

Oh, and by the way: Have You Seen This One?

#63 – The Bird With The Crystal Plumage – Argento’s First Film!

Hello HYSTOphiles! We’re back, and I’m so excited to be back in giallo territory! Our film this time around is Dario Argento’s very first, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage

Virtually everyone’s expression when they first hear this title…

It’s the story of an American writer who witnesses an almost-murder one night while walking home. He becomes an amateur sleuth, and we get to go along for the ride. As in most gialli, the murderer is disguised and wears black leather gloves. And, as in all of his films, it is the director’s hands you see on screen in these scenes…

Ladies and gentlemen, Mister Dario Argento…

I couldn’t wait to see what Keith thought of this Italian classic…and I can’t wait for you to find out too! You can count on us talking about what’s been entertaining us lately and what we’re covering next time around. We hope you can join us because we would really like to know…

#61 is our 3rd Annual Christmas Special…and it’s SUPERSIZED!

Hello HYSTO-philes, and MERRY CHRISTMAS! For our 3rd Annual Christmas Special we’ve supersized the podcast for your holiday listening pleasure!

We picked two VERY different movies that we each consider holiday classics. Keith’s pick was the 2003 rom com Love Actually featuring about 50 actors in lead roles…

The main character is…all of them…

This film is pretty divisive. Just Google it and see. But the real question is did Keith torture me or treasure me? You know how to find out…

My choice for Keith was the 1980 horror classic Christmas Evil aka Better Watch Out aka Terror in Toyland. This movie has been a holiday staple for me from way back, and it’s also famed director John Water’s favorite Christmas movie.

The usual Killer Santa suspects…

For a killer Santa movie this film is so much better than it has any right to be, at least to me. My love for it grows every year, but what did Keith think about it? Did it make him merry, or Grinch-y?

Along with all this fun we added our rankings of the movies we’ve covered since Keith became co-host, and Keith also announces his choice for our next episode, which will be the last one for 2018! We hope you’ll join us, because we really wanna know…

Christmas Evil – 1980

#59 is “Made in 1950” part two, and it’s ready for its closeup, Mr. DeMille!

Hello HYSTO-philes! We are back with part two of “MADE IN 1950!” (I’m counting episode #46 as part one…sue me) Keith is back (YAY!) and he watched All About Eve along with the movie of choice for this episode so he could be up to speed. The movie we’re focusing on in this episode is the 1950 classic by Billy Wilder, Sunset Boulevard, starring Gloria Swanson, Eric von Stroheim, and (swoon) William Holden (be still my heart!).

The three stars of Sunset Boulevard, but I’m only looking at one…

I couldn’t wait for Keith to see these two movies because they are two of my all-time favorite movies of all time! You all will remember how Paul Kastava (former co-host and forever friend) FAMOUSLY didn’t like All About Eve (All About LEAVING the theater…sigh), but Keith really liked it…

Did you hear that, Paul? He liked it. He really liked it…

So, after a little discussion on All About Eve, we got to our movie of the moment, Sunset Boulevard, and Keith really let me know how he felt about the film…

“We had faces!” So freaking awesome, Miss Swanson…

We had a fantastic conversation about this film, and we also talked about what living in the year 1950 was like (the average household income in 1950 was $3,300. Think about that…

$3,300???? “THAT’S NOT EVEN ENOUGH FOR A FUR COAT! SAY IT!”

Of course we also talk about what’s entertaining us lately (OMG the new Suspiria remake!), and we announce what movie we’ll talk about in episode #60 “Made in 1950 part three”

So, we really want to know…

#58 is sans Keith, but Kellie and Jeremiah are here to celebrate The Love Witch

Hello HYSTO-philes! We’re back! Well, I’m back. Due to schedule issues Keith isn’t joining in this time around (don’t worry: he’ll be back next time). Joining me in his absence are good friend of the podcast Kellie Arnold and first time guest Jeremiah Wallace! I recorded the three of us as we discussed the film The Love Witch.

We recorded this session immediately after watching the film at The Alamo Drafthouse. Because the room I usually use for recording was occupied, we sat cross-legged on the bed for what Jeremiah dubbed “Pillow Talk.”

The Love Witch is the story of a young witch in California in the 70’s who uses spells and magic to get men to fall in love with her.

Quite bewitching, huh?

As I had hoped, Kellie and Jeremiah really enjoyed the movie, and we all had a lot to say about it…in bed!

I also talk about what’s been entertaining me lately, and of course I talk about our next episode. I really hope you’ll join in on the fun…

So…Have You Seen This One?

IT’S OUR 3RD ANNUAL VERY SPECIAL HALLOWEEN SPECIAL! (aka #57)

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!!!

Hello, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! It’s our third annual Very Special Halloween Special, and Keith and I had a blast celebrating the holiday with these cinematic treats!

First up is my choice, 2013’s The WNUF Halloween Special…

Tonight at 7!!!

The premise: someone recorded a live, local Halloween special back in 1987 in a supposedly haunted house. What ensues is a fantastic “deteriorated VHS” recording of what transpired that night, including the super-cheesy ads. I always make sure this is on my annual personal Halloween film festival list, and I was thrilled to hear what Keith thought about it.

Next up, well, pretty much every horror fan in the world has been waiting for the new Halloween (2018), starring the incredible Jamie Lee Curtis, so we discussed it LITERALLY MINUTES AFTER WE SAW IT! I swear: you can still smell the popcorn. This was Keith’s idea, and I was 100% on board! We had a great time discussing the film and some of the background on it. We did include some spoilers, but until the very end, and we warn you beforehand…

Spoiler: the characters Laurie and Michael are both in this one…

Before all this I talk about my new TV love The Haunting of Hill House, and then later we discuss our theme for the next two episodes!

Won’t you join us?

Episode #56 is chock full of BAD WORDS

Greetings HYSTO-philes! We’re back with Episode #56 and it is just bursting with Bad Words.

You can fill in the blanks on your own…

Yes, this time around we are covering Keith’s choice which is Bad Words, directed by and starring Jason Bateman as a forty year-old man who attempts to win a children’s national spelling bee because, well, if I tell you why then you won’t have any reason to watch the movie…

Hmmmmm. That’s actually not such a bad idea…

Keith says he felt very different watching this movie this time around; his enjoyment level changed…but as to whether he thought is was better or worse on his second watching, well, you’ll just have to listen in to find out…

Just one of the scenes with Jason Bateman’s character bullying a child in Bad Words. Trust me: this is the most tame one…

I have LOTS to say about this movie, plus we talk about what’s been entertaining us lately (I have LOTS to share about that as well) and we announce our choices for our 3rd Annual Very Special Halloween Special!

Won’t you join us?

EPISODE #55 WILL KILL YOU…FASTER!

The women of FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!

Hello HYSTOphiles! We’re back with a smokin’ hot movie to share…Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! Russ Meyers ode to “The violence in women!” This hot rod of a movie was released in 1965 when I was five years old; I wouldn’t see it until I was about twenty-five years old, and it left quite an impression on me..

Go, Pussycats, Go!

I think the thing that impressed me the most had to be the character Varla, played by the one-and-only Tura Satana. Her scenery-chewing performance is the stuff of movie legend…

LEGENDARY

I was really excited to bring this movie into Keith’s world, and we also had surprise guest Cassandra Weyandt join us for the conversation on the film. Did Keith dig it like Cass and I? Tune in to find out…also find out what’s entertaining us lately, and what film Keith chose for Episode #56. I hope you can join us because we really want to know…

Keith’s first official pick for Episode #54 is a real treasure, and I ain’t “Lion!”

We interrupt this usually silly site with a movie that is bound to move anyone who has a beating heart. For Episode #54 Keith’s pick is the 2016 film Lion.  Directed by Garth Davis, it’s the true story of a boy who got hopelessly lost when he was only five years old, yet managed to find his way home over twenty-five years later…

Young Saroo, before he lost his way…

There’s no mystery this time around as to whether I thought this was a treasure or a torture: this is a magnificent and moving film. Please, please watch this film, then join us as we gush all over it. I’m not kidding: this movie left me like puddle on the floor. I honestly can’t remember in any recent time a film that affected me so profoundly.

Watch it without tissues. Go on. I dare you…

As if we didn’t have reason enough to cry already, there is also a major technical recording glitch at the start of this episode, and it’s the worst to come our way since HYSTO began…but we soldiered on! Listen to our horrible audio as we discuss what is keeping us entertained lately, and later announce my BUXOM choice for next time around!

Won’t you join us?

Episode #53 Welcomes Keith Karseno & Hedwig!

Hedwig beehive’s it up…

Hello HYSTOphiles! As we embark on our third year of movie-madness I also get to welcome a new co-host: Keith Karseno! No one can replace “Brooklyn Paul,” but I can tell you right now we had a blast recording this one, and I can’t wait to see what the future brings! But, let’s get back to #53…

It was my turn this time around to choose, and I know Keith doesn’t really like musicals, so I picked the 2001 rock show Hedwig And The Angry Inch. It’s such a unique story, and I knew Keith had never seen it, so I thought it would be perfect…

This ain’t no Disney flick…

Written by, directed by, and starring John Cameron Mitchell, this one is unforgettable. At least think so. What did Keith think? You know I’m not going to tell you! Listen in to find out…

Gender bending at its finest…

…and, of course, we also talk about what’s entertaining us lately, what movie we’re watching next time (Keith’s first “official” pick!), and we say hi to Kellie and the guy that used to be my co-host (Peter? Saul? What was his name?).

(jk Paul: we already miss you, buddy.)

Won’t you join us? Because we really want to know HAVE YOU SEEN THIS ONE?
